About

I first became aware of FreeBSD over 25 years ago. At the time, I was working with Unisys 68k servers which were running SCO Unix and I was looking for some free alternative of Unix which I could run on x86 PC hardware as a hobbyist. When I started comparing Redhat Linux with FreeBSD, I found that FreeBSD was more "like" the Unix I was used to. In addition, FreeBSD offered a complete operating system ready for both pre-compiled packages or their 'Ports' that could be compiled from source. Linux, on the other hand, really depended on the distribution or "distro" that you would choose to get an OS up and running. All these Linux distros have ended up in competition with each other. I never became a "fan boy" of any particular Linux distribution, but I would not hesitate to recommend Ubuntu or Fedora.

My first deployment of FreeBSD was with version 4.0, when I purchased the FreeBSD Handbook publication, which came bundled with four CDROMs. I slowly became more and more familiar with the workings of FreeBSD. After twenty years' experience using FreeBSD, I wanted to share my knowledge, so you, the reader, may quickly setup tasks in a clear and concise manner, given step by step instructions and simple, logical explanations to using FreeBSD as a server.

Steve's PC Corner was started in 2005, with the original idea of providing an FAQ for PC related hardware problems but then starting to focus on the "Home Gateway" project and the FreeBSD Operating System. The FreeBSD 'Articles' provide step-by-step instructions for installing FreeBSD, disk mirroring, installing and maintaining Ports Tree, setting up AMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP), DHCP server, DDClient, DYNU DNS, Setup SSL, Setup PPPoE client and running a Samba server on local LAN. I truly hope you find this site useful.
